Infinera Solutions for Submarine Networks: Key Benefits
The worldwide growth in Internet traffic and bandwidth connectivity extends from terrestrial networks to festoon, regional and trans-oceanic submarine networks. Infinera's integrated terrestrial and SLTE solution using the DTN enables service providers to deploy a common optical transport solution across metro, regional and long-haul terrestrial backhaul networks as well as festoon, regional and trans-oceanic submarine networks up to 6,500km.
The key benefits of the solution include:
Double the capacity: The Infinera DTN enables service providers to upgrade existing submarine cables to 25GHz channel spacing, enabling a doubling of total cable capacity up to 160 wavelengths.
Integrated dispersion compensation: The Infinera solution uses an integrated dispersion compensation technique that is significantly simpler and cheaper than the per-channel dispersion management of traditional submarine systems.
Dramatically shorter lead times: Infinera equipment is delivered in weeks, or even days, rather than the many months lead time that is typical for submarine systems.
Reduced operational complexity: Digital operations and software automation reduce engineering complexity for deployment and channel additions, allowing submarine network operators to deploy additional capacity on existing cable systems faster, and at lower cost, than is possible using conventional SLTE systems.
New service opportunity: The Infinera system supports newer service tapes, such as 10GbE LAN PHY, and 40G services. These may not be available on traditional SLTE systems.
Combined with the use of DTN for terrestrial back-haul applications supporting Digital ROADM functionality with integrated ODU1 switching and DWDM transport of up to 1.6Tb/s per fiber and 1600km reach, submarine network operators can consolidate both terrestrial and submarine networks to reduce CapEx, simplify operations and offer a common set of end-end of geography-independent wholesale bandwidth services.
